I don’t understand why Sailor Moon Super S gets tons of hate saying it was horrible when in (my opinion) it was the best of them all!

First, the season has a strong focus on Chibi-Usa, who was the Scrappy to many people.

Secondly, I think it might have something to do with coming off the heels of Sailor Moon S, which many people considered to be the best season of Sailor Moon.  For those who enjoyed the darker tone of S, SuperS was a step in the wrong direction.

I seem to recall that somewhere, Naoko Takeuchi said that sailor senshi are born as close as possible to where they need to be.  However, I may be getting this confused with someone’s WMG, so I’m not sure!

So, did she ever say something to this effect, say something similar, or never said anything of the sort at all?

So, in the StarS anime Sailor Galaxia says that they’ve conquered almost 80% of the galaxy. All that’s left is the Sol system.

…Did the writers really mean to imply that there only five inhabited planets in the entire galaxy?  Or that only 50 or so planets have sailor senshi?  Or that there are only around 70 senshi in the whole galaxy?

After the planet Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planetoid, a ton of people started making comments about Sailor Pluto no longer being a sailor senshi.

Every time I see one, a part of me dies inside.

First, when Pluto was reclassified, it wasn’t because we learned anything new or shocking about Pluto - it was because we discovered a ton of Pluto-sized objects in the outer solar system.  There were two options: either include a ridiculously high amount of objects to our list of planets, or come up with a new definition of “planet” and a new term for objects like Pluto.  The latter was determined to be the simpler solution, so that’s what we went with.

While all sailor senshi are associated with some kind of celestial objects, they’re not all associated with planets - in the anime, we have Sailor Moon herself, as well as the Sailor Starlights who appear to be associated with actual stars.  In the manga, we have the asteroid senshi.

Similarly, there’s no reason to think that Sailor Pluto should be less powerful because she’s associated with a planetoid.  Sailor Moon is explicitly shown to be the most powerful sailor senshi in the series, and the moon isn’t even close to the largest non-sun object in our solar system (that would be Jupiter).  Obviously, size ≠ power.

If anything would warrant change, it would be her henshin phrase (“Pluto Planet Power”), but that would be it.

The moon was never classified as a planet.  Does that mean Sailor Moon won’t be in the new anime?

Although all sailor senshi are associated with celestial objects, not all sailor senshi are associated with objects classified as planets.  In the manga, we even had asteroid senshi, and asteroids are even smaller than planetoids.

I’ve never really understood the aversion people have to adaptations being different from one another. This is an opportunity for an entirely new imagining of the Sailor Moon world; while it would be nice if it didn’t take as many liberties as the old anime, isn’t it a wonderful thing that there should be some things that set it apart as different and unique? Why would anyone want to get all excited and pumped for a brand new anime series if it’s going to be exactly like the manga we already know like the back of our hands?

I hope it’s different. I hope it’s not “100% faithful” to the manga. That would be boring as hell. This is a magical, miraculous new series and gosh darnit, I want it to be interesting, surprising and new.

FMA: Brotherhood followed the manga storyline, and people loved it. Honestly, I’d prefer Sailor Moon followed the manga. Monsters-of-the-day got boring, fast. Keep a few, if you must, but we don’t need 40 eps per story arc when it’s mostly filler.

I’m not saying the story should follow the old anime, either…? I want it to be like PGSM, where they start off following the manga very closely and it’s obviously a much greater influence than the anime for the entire series, but as it progresses and becomes its own series it introduces new elements and characters and plots, etc. that makes it a distinct adaptation and not just a carbon copy.
I’m not saying that absolutely everything should be different, I do want it to adhere more to the manga (because the manga is wonderful) but I don’t want it to be exactly the same. It would seem totally anticlimactic after 20 years to make something that’s identical to what we had at the beginning.

I really don’t get it, either.  For one, the original story has what I feel are some serious flaws - mostly with Crystal Tokyo and Neo Queen Serenity, where we are never, ever shown just why Usagi deserves to be queen of the world outside of having the Strongest Power Evah and being the Moon princess.  (How does being the Moon princess equate to deserving to rule Earth…?)  This is something I’d really like to see addressed in SM13.

Another thing is that elements that work in one medium don’t necessarily work in another.  Sometimes you’ll have too many characters, or too few.  Sometimes you’ve got inner monologue that has to go.

And let’s look at some of the changes made in PGSM - I thought Ikuko was a much better character, having been given a personality outside of being Usagi’s mom.  I liked that the other senshi didn’t get totally shafted at the end.  I liked the “Darkury” arc, since it gave some attention and development to an under-utilized but highly-popular character.  So yeah, I’ll be the last person to whine about changes just because they’re changes.

I’ll admit I’m in the “want to see the story brought to life” camp, but I’m not so naive to think that you can possibly take a manga and turn it into a 100% spot-on faithful adaptation and have it work.

Same here.  Honestly, I’d just like to see an adaptation of Stars that doesn’t get steamrollered.

First off I am really excited that there will be a new Sailor Moon anime next summer. I got into anime and manga through Sailor Moon, it still has a big place in my heart, and I can’t wait to watch the new anime too!!

However there are a few misconceptions that have been going around since the announcement. I watched the SM 20th anniversary event live (and yeah, I got up at 3:10 AM to watch it live orz) and have read a few Japanese articles summarizing the event and the new anime announcement (mainly from here and here), and there are some claims about the upcoming anime that really don’t match what was said…here are some of them:

• That song Momoiro Clover Z sang after the announcement was made is going to be the new opening theme!

Actually, the song, which is called “Otome Sensou” (written as Z女戦争 because the kanji for otome is 乙女 and hey that first kanji kinda looks like a Z, get it? XD), is just the latest song that the group has released. It came out last month and they only performed it because, again, it’s their latest song. Considering the song will be a year old by the time the new anime comes out, it’s extremely unlikely they will use it for the OP. It IS true that Momoiro Clover Z will be doing the OP, but it will likely be a new song and not “Otome Sensou.”

• Ikuhara Kunihiko is directing!

Nobody has said anything about who the director, producer, etc. are yet - all we know so far is that Toei is going to be doing it. Considering it is a reboot, I don’t think they will get anyone who directed the old series to direct the new series.

• The new series is aimed at older audiences only and will not be for kids at all!

Again, no one said anything during the event that suggested that it would not be for kids. Rather, they said (roughly summarizing) that they hope that the adults that grew up watching the original will enjoy the new series too:

(after talking about how she voiced a mascot character on last year’s Pretty Cure series and how there were many Toei staff members who had joined because they saw SM back in the day and wanted to do anime just like that) “When those people that still like Sailor Moon as adults watch this new SM, they won’t be satisfied if we the creators don’t really put our hearts into it and strive to power up from the last series, so I want to work hard on it. I’m looking forward to it.” -Mitsuishi Kotono

I’m sure Toei is expecting lots of adult fans to watch the new series, but “hoping to appeal to the older fans” =/= “this is ONLY for the older fans, no kids allowed.”

• The Dark Kingdom are not the villains!

This is a misinterpretation of Mitsuishi Kotono’s latest blog entry, where she says

“早く演じたくてうずうずしてる！
しかし、敵はダークキングダムではない！
あの頃のがむしゃらだった自分！

が〜〜〜っ！”

or, “I really really want to perform (in the new series)! But the enemy isn’t the Dark Kingdom! It’s my reckless self from back then! Gaaaahhhh!” She’s talking about how, if she does get to be in the new anime, she wants to do as good as she did back then.

Anyway, please reblog this post, and if you have any corrections to make on any parts I translated please tell me, I’m still a bit doinky but hopefully I got the message across. ^^

I am really curious to find out what the actual themesong will be.  I hope it’s good, and though I love all the themesongs I don’t think anyone’s ever managed to top Moonlight Densetsu.
